A New Forest Pony is a type of pony, a breed of horse. They are a draft and riding horse from the New Forest region in Hampshire UK. They can be bay, black or brown with flaxen mane and tail. The New Forest Pony is used as a mount for children, as they grow very big but also fast enough to keep up with an adult on their regular routes through the woods and open heath lands.
They are incredibly hardy creatures living out most days of the year in all weather conditions, only sheltering in stables at night.
New Forest Ponies are known for their even temperaments which make them well suited for both experienced riders and beginners alike. Their long history alongside humans has allowed them to develop an intelligent and gentle nature which is often seen in the way they interact with children.
The New Forest Pony is one of only a few breeds that allow the rider to touch their horses whilst riding, as they are trained to stand completely still when a child or beginner rider needs to remount. This trait has led them being called 'The Kinder Horse'. The ponies also enjoy human contact and will happily come up for a cuddle if you offer a treat.
