Discover Tours

A Sperm Whale is a large animal known for its massive head and prominent rounded hump. They are dark brown to gray in color with light white markings, and their skin is tough and wrinkled.

Sperm whales usually dive deeper than 3,000 feet (914 meters), and they spend around 20-30 minutes underwater before resurfacing for air. A Sperm Whale's blowhole is located on the left side of its head, and right after a deep dive it can expel a spray up to 50 ft in the air when exhaling. Once on the surface, it breathes every 7-8 minutes.

They live in pods made up of members from different generations due to their long maturing time of over 30 years.

A Sperm Whale's brain is the largest in the entire world. It also has the largest brain to body mass ratio of any animal on Earth, which makes them extremely intelligent and able to adapt quickly. They are known for their complex societies and cultures that depend on mutual cooperation, similar to chimpanzees.

A Sperm whale's diet consists of Giant squid, but they also eat octopus, sharks, mantis shrimp, crabs and some species of fish like herring and mackerel. Because it feeds mainly on beak-like squid parts (known as "beaks"), most of a Sperm Whale's food is swallowed whole after biting off pieces with its teeth.
